Niccolò Tommaseo's Lo Spirito, il Cuore, la Parola di Caterina da Siena was edited by Piero Misciattelli and issued in Siena by Libreria Editrice Giuntini Bentivoglio & C. Francesco A. Ferrari's San Paolo e la sua dottrina di vita e d'amore was published in Milan by Fratelli Treves and is identified as the second edition. Both volumes are bound in marbled paper-covered boards with green cloth spines and gilt-decorated dark spine labels.

ARTIST / CREATOR BIOGRAPHY
Niccolò Tommaseo (1802-1874) was an Italian writer, linguist, critic, journalist, and political thinker born in Sebenico, now Šibenik, on the Dalmatian coast. He studied law at Padua, graduating in 1822 while cultivating a deep engagement with classical and Italian literature. His friendships with Antonio Rosmini and Alessandro Manzoni helped shape his Catholic, literary, and linguistic outlook. After working in Milan and Florence, Tommaseo entered voluntary exile in France following the suppression of the Florentine journal Antologia, to which he had contributed. He later settled in Venice and became an active participant in the Revolution of 1848, serving the provisional Venetian Republic as a minister and diplomat. After its fall, he lived for a time on Corfu before eventually returning to Italy and spending his final years in Florence. Tommaseo's writing ranged across novels, poetry, criticism, folklore, political essays, and religious reflection. His experimental novel Fede e bellezza and his collections of Italian, Corsican, Greek, and Illyrian folk songs reveal the breadth of his literary interests. His most enduring scholarly legacy rests in lexicography, particularly his influential dictionary of Italian synonyms and the monumental Dizionario della lingua italiana created with Bernardo Bellini. His work united moral inquiry, linguistic precision, and the culturally layered identity of the nineteenth-century Adriatic world.
