^Lot 1209 Pair Chinese Carved Wood Calligraphy Panels Green-Gilt Couplets & Seals 12.5 x 61 Inches Each Large

Pair of tall Chinese wooden calligraphy panels, each carved or incised with vertically arranged characters highlighted in green-gilt pigment. The right panel also bears a smaller inscription and two red seal marks.

The principal inscription appears to form a poetic couplet. From the photograph, the left panel reads approximately:

A close English rendering is: "The moon enters the flowered courtyard; its light is still and the air refreshing."

The right panel begins ??, referring to the tips or branches of a plum tree, and appears to describe the arrival of spring and the plum blossoms. Some of the remaining stylized characters are difficult to identify conclusively from the photograph, so I would not catalogue a complete literal translation as certain without a clearer close-up.
