RIFLE. Cal. 45-70. S# 598. Mfg. in 1886 this early gun was built in the first year of production of this model. It is fitted with a 26" that has dovetailed Rocky Mountain front sight and adjustable leaf "1876" marked rear sight. The upper tang is marked with the early style "-MODEL 1886-" model designation marking. The lower tang has the assembly number "140". The straight grip stock is fitted with a smooth steel crescent buttplate. The assembly number "140" found in the upper channel of the butt and again on the lower inside of the buttplate. It is missing the lower tang stock screw. CONDITION: overall fair+. The metal surfaces have an early reblue with light bbl markings and fine file marks. The frame markings remain very good with some touched up finish and light scratches. The stock set has been lightly sanded with later hand wear. The forearm has a small tight crack, handling marks and small edge chips. The butt has some edge chipping, scuffs, and light scratches. Bore has descent rifling with some pitting. (01-28782/ZAL).
