AUTHENTIC SCULPTURE BY FRANCIS BARNUM
SOLID PEWTER, WOOD BASE, HIGH QUALITY AMERICAN CRAFTSMANSHIP
The Francis Barnum John Buford sculpture is a Civil War collectible pewter piece honoring the Union cavalry general best known for his critical actions at Gettysburg.
HISTORY:
Buford was born in Kentucky in 1826 and came from a military family. He attended the United States Military Academy at West Point, graduating in 1848.
Early military career
Before the Civil War, Buford served:
On the western frontier
In cavalry assignments across frontier territories
In campaigns involving Native American conflicts
He developed a reputation as:
Calm under pressure
Intelligent and practical
An excellent horseman and cavalry officer
Civil War service
When the Civil War began, Buford remained loyal to the Union despite being from a border-state Southern family.
He became known for:
Skilled reconnaissance and scouting
Defensive cavalry tactics
Careful battlefield observation
Unlike many cavalry commanders of the era, Buford often used cavalry as a mobile defensive force rather than only for charges.
Gettysburg
Buford’s most famous moment came at the Battle of Gettysburg on July 1, 1863.
Before the main Union army arrived:
Buford’s cavalry reached Gettysburg first
He recognized the strategic importance of the high ground south of town
He deployed his cavalry west of Gettysburg to delay Confederate forces
His troops fought a delaying action against advancing Confederates for several hours.
This bought enough time for Union infantry to arrive and secure:
Cemetery Hill
Cemetery Ridge
Other strong defensive positions
Many historians consider Buford’s decision one of the most important actions of the entire battle.
Later life and death
After Gettysburg:
Buford’s health rapidly declined, likely from illness and exhaustion
He died in December 1863 at only 37 years old
Before his death, President Abraham Lincoln promoted him to major general in recognition of his service.
Legacy
Buford is remembered as:
One of the Union’s best cavalry commanders
A key figure in the Union victory at Gettysburg
A thoughtful and disciplined officer whose battlefield judgment helped shape the outcome of the war
Today, monuments and memorials at Gettysburg honor his leadership and early defense of the battlefield.
