The sculpture “Christmas Truce” by Francis Barnum is a limited-edition Civil War–themed collectible sculpture that is based on the idea of temporary peace between opposing soldiers during the American Civil War, especially around the Christmas season.
Even though the title is sometimes confused with World War I stories (like the famous 1914 Christmas Truce), Barnum’s version is tied to his Civil War narrative style, focusing on Union and Confederate soldiers.
Historical inspiration behind the sculpture
The sculpture is inspired by documented (but rare) moments during the Civil War when soldiers on opposite sides briefly:
stopped firing during Christmas or winter lulls,
exchanged food, tobacco, or small gifts,
spoke across picket lines or rivers,
and acknowledged shared humanity despite the war.
These moments were never official truces, but they did happen in scattered locations, especially in quieter sectors of the front.
One of the most famous examples of this kind of interaction comes from letters and memoirs describing informal exchanges between soldiers during winter encampments along rivers like the Rappahannock, where Union and Confederate troops could sometimes see and talk to each other.
