AUTHENTIC SCULPTURE BY FRANCIS BARNUM
SOLID PEWTER. WOOD BASE, HIGH QUALITY AMERICAN CRAFTSMANSHIP

The sculpture “North Carolina Flag” by Francis Barnum is a Civil War–era themed collectible work that focuses on one of the most important symbols of Confederate North Carolina identity: the state flag used during the early years of the Civil War.

Although Francis Barnum is best known for his detailed Civil War battlefield sculptures, this piece is different because it centers on symbolism rather than action or combat.

HISTORY:
History of North Carolina Flag (Francis Barnum)

The sculpture “North Carolina Flag” by Francis Barnum is part of his Civil War–themed collectible series that focuses on flags, symbols, and battlefield memory rather than combat scenes.

Its historical basis comes from the North Carolina state flag adopted in 1861, when the state joined the Confederacy during the American Civil War. That wartime flag represented North Carolina’s identity at a moment when states were aligning either with the Union or the Confederacy.

Civil War background of the flag

When North Carolina seceded in May 1861, it adopted a new flag design that included:

a red field,
a white star,
and dates referencing 1775 (Mecklenburg independence tradition) and 1861 (secession).

This flag was carried by North Carolina regiments during the Civil War and became a symbol of state pride and military identity.

After the war, the flag was redesigned in 1885, moving away from Confederate-era symbolism toward a more modern state identity.
