AUTHENTIC SCULPTURE BY FRANCIS BARNUM
SOLID PEWTER, WOOD BASE, HIGH QUALITY AMERICAN CRAFTSMANSHIP
Francis J. Barnum’s Culp’s Hill is a limited-edition Civil War pewter sculpture made for the Chilmark Fine Pewter series, based on a key defensive position at the Battle of Gettysburg.
What the sculpture represents
The piece depicts Union soldiers defending Culp’s Hill, one of the most important defensive positions during the Battle of Gettysburg.
Barnum’s sculpture focuses on:
Union troops holding fortified wooded terrain
intense close-quarters fighting
the defensive struggle during night and early morning attacks
HISTORY:
Battle of Gettysburg included a major defensive position called Culp’s Hill, which played a key role in the Union victory.
What Culp’s Hill was
Culp’s Hill was a heavily wooded hill on the eastern side of the Gettysburg battlefield. It was important because:
it anchored the right flank of the Union Army,
it provided high ground and strong defensive cover,
and it overlooked key roads and approaches to Gettysburg.
What happened there
Fighting on Culp’s Hill took place mainly on July 2–3, 1863:
Confederate forces attacked Union positions in attempts to break the line
Union troops built strong defensive works using rocks and trees
fighting was often close-range and occurred in difficult wooded terrain
some of the battle continued into the night
Outcome
Union forces successfully held Culp’s Hill, which helped:
prevent Confederate breakthroughs on the Union right side
stabilize the Union defensive line
contribute to the overall Union victory at Gettysburg
Why it mattered
Culp’s Hill is considered important because:
losing it could have collapsed the Union position
it was one of the strongest natural defensive points on the battlefield
it helped secure Gettysburg as a turning point in the Civil War
