Lot 113 Japanese Sumida Gawa Pottery Red Lidded Jar

Item/Description: Japanese Sumida Gawa pottery lidded ovoid jar, with a flat-topped lid featuring a seated figure finial. Dating to the late Taisho era to early Showa era, circa 1924-1941. Heavily potted stoneware with a ribbed red-orange ground exterior, partially covered with a dripped flambe glaze descending from the rim in tones of deep brown and white. Features three dimensional polychrome-enameled relief figures of Buddhist monk, folkloric characters receiving offerings. The reverse features an applied white ceramic plaque marked with a blue underglaze signature for Inoue Ryosai, the family workshop of highly influential Tokyo potters who pioneered the Sumida Gawa style in the late 19th century.

This piece is a classic example of their Yokohama Period production style, post-1924. After the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake destroyed their original workshop, Inoue Ryosai III (Japanese, 1888-1971) relocated the factory to Yokohama, where he spearheaded a commercial shift toward the vibrant, cinnabar-red grounds and bold polychrome palettes that came to define the style for the Western export market.
