Lot 104 Japanese Satsuma Moriage Figural Export Vase
Item/Description: Japanese Satsuma moriage figural vase dating to the late Meiji Period, circa 1890-1912. Bulbous earthenware body with a constricted neck and flared rim. Hand-painted with polychrome enamels and heavy moriage (raised enamel) detailing. Two large rectangular cartouches feature figural scenes of scholars or immortals in traditional robes within a simplified landscape. The surrounding ground is densely decorated with a gold-enriched "brocade" aesthetic, featuring complex geometric and floral patterns. The neck is ornamented with vertical panels of shippo (seven treasures) and floral motifs set against a rich iron-red and gilt ground. A classic example of high-relief export ware with characteristic cream-colored crackle glaze. Unmarked.
