Lot 102 Japanese Satsuma Moriage Lidded Vessel
Item/Description: Japanese Satsuma moriage footed vessel, dating to the Meiji Period, circa 1868-1912. Ornate cream-colored earthenware vessel with characteristic fine crackle glaze. Features elaborate moriage (raised enamel) and heavy gilt detailing throughout. Body decorated with dual hand-painted panels: one depicting geishas in traditional kimono, the reverse featuring floral motifs in blue and yellow. Sculptural elements include a domed lid surmounted by a shishi (foo dog) finial, with matching shishi-form handles at the shoulders. The vessel is elevated on three integrated, curved tripod feet. Underside of lid marked with a three-line mark workshop or painter's mark. Base shows two markings, including the character "Tsuchi" meaning "clay" or "earth." By marking their pottery "Tsuchi," Japanese artists both identified the specific quality of the raw clay as the craft's essential foundation and honored the wabi-sabi spirit by celebrating the material's innate, earthy connection to the natural world. The secondary mark most likely is the artist's signature or studio name. (Koro, Ginger Jar, Censer)
