Lot 98 Japanese Blue & White Artia Sometsuke Bowl
Item/Description: Japanese Arita sometsuke porcelain bowl. Late Meiji Period, late 19th Century circa 1870-1890. Japanese porcelain bowl with a scalloped, mokko-style four-lobed rim. The mokko-style is an auspicious motif derived from the four-lobed cross-section of the Japanese quince fruit. The shape is also traditionally associated with a bird's nest, and is a powerful symbol for fertility, family protection, and prosperity.
Decorated with the traditional sometsuke (underglaze blue) technique, featuring a central medallion with a hand-painted bird in a stylized landscape. Interior is decorated with geometric borders and floral medallions, while the exterior displays radiating panels and stylized wave motifs. Typical of high-quality Arita export ware from the late 1800s, this piece reflects the refined technical standards of the Saga Prefecture kilns, blending traditional Japanese motifs with a structured aesthetic favored by international collectors.
Underside shows biscuit foot ring and iron-brown oxidation, the distinct hallmark of traditional Arita wood-fired kilns. Base is unmarked, a common practice for high-quality Arita export porcelain from the late 19th century.
