Lot 90 Chinese Ming Yunnan Cobalt Brushed Jar
Item/Description: Provincial glazed earthenware storage jar, likely from Yunnan province, of compressed ovoid form with a short upright neck. Late Ming Dynasty, circa mid-17th Century. Decorated in a looser, freeform hand typical of regional kilns, featuring sweeping freehand cobalt brushstrokes that depict billowing clouds and floral motifs under a thin, translucent celadon-toned glaze. During this time, imperial control over kilns weakened due to civil war, leading to a surge in provincial or folk pottery that was more experimental and freehand in its decoration. Characterized by its unrefined "wabi-sabi" aesthetic, the jar exhibits an uneven glaze and exposed clay body. The underside retains an official red "Jianding" wax seal from the Chinese Cultural Relics Bureau, serving as a significant provenance marker for its authorized and legal export during the mid-20th century. The bureau only certifies and seals objects of genuine Chinese origin that were part of their domestic antique market. (Minyao)
