Lot 87 Chinese Swatow Blue & White Carp Dish

Item/Description: Antique Chinese Swatow blue and white "carp" dish. A provincial heavily potted porcelain shallow circular dish, likely produced at the Zhangzhou kilns for the export market. The interior is decorated in underglaze blue with a freehand, expressive rendering of a leaping carp, a symbol of perseverance and success, set amidst stylized aquatic vegetation and water weeds. Typical of Swatow ware, the vessel features a milky, slightly crackled glaze and characteristic kiln grit adhering to the base. This piece represents the bold, utilitarian vitality of provincial export ceramics, often referred to as "Kitchen Ming" due to its origins in Fujian province.
