Item/Description: Framed woodcut print artwork titled "Sonnenaufgang" (Sunrise) 1914 by the prominent German Expressionist artist Erich Heckel. The artwork is signed and dated on the lower right. The image shows a coastal landscape with a dark sun (sometimes interpreted as both sun and moon simultaneously) hanging above jagged, stylized rock formations. It is a starkly graphic woodcut print that reflects the psychological intensity and simplified compositions characteristic of his early work. Erich Heckel (German, 1883–1970), a co-founder of the influential German Expressionist group Die Brücke (The Bridge). Erich Heckel's work was deeply impacted by the historical context of early 20th-century Germany. During the Nazi regime, his art was labeled "degenerate," resulting in the destruction of his studio and the confiscation of hundreds of his works from public collections. Framing stamp can be seen on the back of the print: "ESPEJOS Y ARTE" located in Venezuela.
