Item/Description: Chinese Famille Rose porcelain inset table screen signed by Chen Yunshan. Republic Period, early 20th century. Rectangular porcelain plaque meticulously hand-painted in vibrant Famille Rose enamels by the Chinese artist, Chen Yunshan. The composition features a lush bird and flower decorative program, depicting a central, overflowing bouquet of multicolored chrysanthemums, blooming peonies, and fruit, symbolizing wealth, honor, and longevity. The plaque is inset into a carved dark wood frame with an openwork apron of scrolling tendrils, supported by a matching trestle-base stand.
This piece represents the technical virtuosity of the Republic Period’s archival revivalist style, specifically the transition toward personalized, signed presentation pieces created by master studio artists. The lower left corner is inscribed with a literati-style poetic dedication and two red artist's seals. The inscription translates to: "The spirit of flowers. Respectfully gifted to my elder brother Xianzhou for his elegant enjoyment, by your younger brother, Chen Yunshan."
Chen Yunshan was a notable Chinese porcelain artist active during the Republic Period (1912–1949). He is recognized as part of the second generation of artists at Jingdezhen who continued the refined tradition of painting on porcelain in the literati style after the fall of the imperial kilns. He was renowned for his bird and flower (huaniao) paintings. His style is characterized by delicate, expressive brushwork that bridges traditional Chinese ink painting with the vibrant Famille Rose enamel palette. He worked during a "Golden Age" of individual studio porcelain in Jingdezhen. This era saw artists signing their own names and adding poetic inscriptions, a move away from the anonymous factory production of the Qing dynasty.
